Achieving Near-Perfect Uptime with Smart Roaming (and Why IoT SIMs Didn’t Fit)

How High Tide delivered near-perfect uptime across a 100+ site deployment using Robustel Smart Roaming v3 — and why IoT SIMs were not commercially viable for the data volumes involved.

High Tide Group

When businesses rely on mobile connectivity across multiple sites, “good signal” doesn’t always mean “good performance”.

At High Tide, we see this time and time again — and it was exactly the challenge behind a recent 100+ site deployment across offices, retail units and mixed commercial environments.

The Reality of Multi-Site Mobile Connectivity

On paper, multi-network SIMs sound simple.

In practice, deployments quickly run into real-world issues:

  • Routers installed inside buildings
  • Signal loss through walls and structures
  • Highly variable RF environments
  • Performance fluctuating between operators
  • Sites behaving completely differently despite identical hardware

This is where most solutions fall down.

Many “multi-network” devices still rely on signal strength alone to make decisions.

That’s not enough.

Why IoT SIMs Were Not an Option

A key factor in this deployment was data usage.

The estate generated a high volume of traffic, driven by business-critical applications — far beyond what typical IoT deployments are designed for.

The problem with IoT SIMs in this scenario:

  • Designed for low data usage such as telemetry, sensors and lightweight traffic
  • Often subject to fair usage or throttling policies
  • Performance can be deprioritised on mobile networks
  • Not commercially viable at higher data volumes

In short:

IoT SIMs are excellent for devices — but not for business-grade connectivity at scale.

We needed a solution built for performance, resilience and sustained throughput.

The Approach: Intelligent Network Selection

To solve this properly, we deployed Robustel R1520 routers with Smart Roaming v3.

This wasn’t about simple failover — it was about continuous optimisation.

Smart Roaming v3 evaluates:

  • Real-time throughput
  • Cell quality
  • Latency through active ping benchmarking

Instead of reacting only when a connection fails, it helps identify degradation early and move to a better-performing network before users are impacted.

The Result: A Self-Healing Network

Following deployment, the results were clear:

  • Measured uptime across the estate close to 100%
  • No requirement for manual router resets
  • No engineer callouts to recover service
  • Full remote control via terminal interface or SMS

Sites experiencing degraded performance could be remotely moved to a better network without needing a site visit.

The network didn’t just stay online — it adapted.

The Commercial Impact

This wasn’t just a technical win — it delivered real operational value:

  • Reduced site visits, lowering support costs
  • Faster issue resolution, improving service response
  • Less downtime for end users
  • More predictable performance across a distributed estate

For multi-site organisations, that matters.

Every avoided engineer visit is time saved, cost avoided and disruption removed.

Industry Insight

“Smart Roaming is a great tool for improving the reliability of cellular networks but it requires knowledge of multinetwork SIMs & cellular technology to get the most from it. Andrew and the High Tide team have achieved very high levels of uptime in this project with their expert tuning of Smart Roaming in challenging RF environments.

Their choice and implementation of WireGuard VPN was also expertly optimised for network connections that can drop and need to re-build occasionally.”

Our View

“Robustel's Smart Roaming capability is a true differentiator between their 4G/5G routers and others on the market. The ability to fully understand network conditions with a proper site survey, and remotely repair problematic connections, gives both peace of mind and protection against costly site visits.

We wouldn’t deploy a roaming SIM estate without it.”

Why This Approach Is Now Standard

Following this project, Smart Roaming v3 is now standard across High Tide multi-network deployments.

We’ve built a repeatable model around:

  • RF-aware site design
  • Intelligent network selection
  • Remote-first recovery
  • Performance-led decision making

The outcome is consistent:

  • Higher uptime
  • Lower operational overhead
  • Scalable, resilient connectivity

Thinking About Multi-Network Connectivity?

If you’re deploying connectivity across multiple sites — especially in challenging environments — the difference between “connected” and “performing” is everything.

We design and deliver solutions that stay online, recover intelligently and scale without driving up support overhead.
